Most knee pain that lingers beyond a few weeks has a soft-tissue or tendon component. The patellar tendon connects the kneecap to the shinbone and absorbs a significant load with every step, squat, and jump. When that tendon is repeatedly stressed beyond its capacity to repair, it develops microscopic damage that accumulates over time. This is patellar tendinopathy, and rest alone rarely resolves it because the tendon's blood supply is limited and the healing process tends to stall.
