A bulging disc extends beyond its normal boundary without rupturing. It creates pressure on surrounding tissue and nerves, and left unaddressed, it can progress to a full herniation. Spinal Decompression Therapy addresses the mechanical compression directly, before it reaches that point.
A bulging disc and a herniated disc are related but distinct conditions. In a bulge, the outer layer of the disc, the annulus fibrosus, remains intact but stretches outward past its normal perimeter. In a herniation, the inner nucleus has pushed through a crack or tear in that outer layer.
Clinically, the distinction matters less than the location and degree of nerve compression. A bulging disc at L4-L5 pressing on the L4 nerve root can cause just as much radiating pain as a herniation at the same level. Many patients arrive with imaging showing a bulge and are told there is nothing to do short of waiting and managing pain, but that's not always the case.
Spinal Decompression Therapy may be particularly effective for bulging discs because the outer layer is still intact. The negative pressure created during decompression can draw the bulge inward, reducing pressure on the adjacent nerve and allowing the disc to recover some of its normal shape over a course of treatment.
