Low back pain is a symptom, not a single diagnosis. The lumbar spine is a complex structure of discs, vertebrae, nerves, and the deep muscles that support and move it. Pain in the low back can come from a compressed disc pressing on a nerve root, from degenerated disc tissue that has lost its ability to absorb shock, from chronically overloaded muscles and their attachment points along the lumbar spine and pelvis, or from combinations of all three.
